Patapsco Valley State Park is one of our region's best- kept secrets extending 32 miles along the Patapsco River between Baltimore and Howard Counties. The park encompasses 14,000 acres and has five smartly developed recreational areas. Activities include hiking, fly fishing, camping, canoeing, horseback riding and world-class mountain biking trails, as well as picnicking for families or large groups in the park's many pavilions. The Hilton area of the park is situated just across the Baltimore County line near Catonsville and boasts quaint family camping areas and well-maintained and marked hiking trails, but the main attraction for kids is the recycled tire playground or "Tire Park". The large playground is located in a well-shaded area and features giant tires for climbing, slides, swings, zip wires and a whimsical play castle. There is a small private camping area with a camp store/concession and 17 family campsites (tent camping only - no electricity) as well as 6 camper cabins with heat and electricity. Camper cabins offer guests the option of enjoying the outdoors, while sleeping on a real bed and closing a real door. Many Maryland State Parks offer camper cabins, which are small rustic cabins with beds for four people -- usually a double and two twin beds set up bunk style. Grills are provided for outdoor cooking and restroom facilities are available nearby. Pets are prohibited in the Hilton campground, as well as in most areas of the park.

Camper cabin reservations must be made for a minimum of two nights on weekends and three nights on holiday weekends from Memorial Day through Labor Day. Rental fees are $50/night. Call 888-432-CAMP (2267) for reservations.

Directions: Hilton Area - From the Baltimore Beltway (I- 695) take Frederick Rd. (Exit 13) through Catonsville to South Rolling Rd. Turn left and continue straight onto Hilton Ave. Follow Hilton Ave. 1.5 miles to the park entrance on right.
